Tetris Wouldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category May Address This Issue

Each time a major honors show draws close, you'll find a clamor for the addition fresh award types to recognize unsung work and delight the hearts of fans who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, which is someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing and significant. Here's the proposal: There should be a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and it will always spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise in the world of video games, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications successfully include numerous genres, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Consider three of this year’s best games, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens outstanding logic titles launched regularly that have no home in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything that year
  • Another imaginative release missed out during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games rank among most popular titles in the world continuing this trend for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with popular creative games competing to become most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and engaging with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. One could readily select five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these represent titles without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers function at the demanding boundary of video game design, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
