Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for several hours when dozens of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that these practices become unprofitable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
